Terrorism

The word terrorism scares each and every one of us. It is something that no one is willing to go through. For that reason, Singapore has taken many actions to make sure that there is sufficient security for the people to live peacefully and with a sense of secure.

Recently, the Singapore Police Force held a drill at Sentosa. The drill was mainly on terrorism and how the public react to such incidents. Stated in the newspapers, its main aim was to see how alert and fast the police force react in such emergency situations. After all these practices and drills, we can strongly say that Singapore can handle any kind of problems it faces to protect its people.

Singapore being such a safe and alert country, there are very slim chances of it being attacked by terrorists. Also, we, the public, can safely move around. Despite all these satisfactions, there is still a sense of fear when the word terrorism is heard.

According to legend, Ethiopian goatherd discovered coffee. It started as food and drink for African tribesmen. From there, it became a worldwide popular drink. Coffee is important among the natural commodities and it is a major source of income among the exporting countries. Many people depended on coffee for their livelihood and drink a lot of coffee. There was a frost in 1975 where almost half the country’s coffee trees were damaged and prices fell to a huge extend. In 1979, a frost hit Brazil again. The income loss could last for three to five years for a single tree and the loss for 15 millions trees was huge. Thus, Brazil stopped all shipments. Farmer planted a lot when prices rose. The prices fell when there was overproduction. Thus, farmers planted other crops. The only solution to this was to limit output, have a reserve and to sell at reasonable prices.

Cross Country cum Total Defence Day

Cross country, being the annual event held in school, was also held this year on the 13th February 2009 at Nanyang Polytechnic. Not only that, we also commemorated our Total Defence Day on the same day.

Few days before this event, our class teachers explained the meaning of the different defences and the importance of it in Singapore. Also, we had a class activity that consisted of a quiz based-on what were taught.

On the day of Cross Country, the girls had to run a total distance of 2.6 kilometers and the boy had to run 3.6 kilometers. We also had a competing round among the girls and boys of different levels. We also had a free supply of MILO by the school. On the whole, I enjoyed the event and would participate in the following years’ events too.

Reflective Summary

Date: 8th March 2009
Time: 5.45 pm

From all the past reflective journals, I have learnt a lot about the climate changes and I will use my knowledge wisely in other situations pertaining to this subject.

Firstly, I have learnt about what climate change is long term effect on shift in statistics of the weather. Also, I was able to understand how the climate change, global warming and the greenhouse effect are related.

After that, in my second journal, I was able to differentiate between the causes by natural variability and human activities. Also, I learnt how human use the earth’s natural resources selfishly and how their activities harm the earth.

In my third journal, I learnt about the effects of climate changes. It has been proven that human acts are ones that affect the earth very badly. I also learnt how small occurrence such as cutting down of trees to make paper can harm the earth.

In my forth journal, I wrote about tips that we can follow to save whatever we are left with on Earth. I have also been following the tips and I am happy that I am saving part of the resources on Earth. I sincerely hope many people will use the tips too.

Lastly, in my fifth journal, I talked how environment events can help to educate the public. In this situation where many people have to cooperate to change the earth for the better, I am very glad to say that the Earth Hour that was conducted recently has served its purpose on not only saving the Earth but also bringing public awareness on the need to save the remnants on Earth.

Thus, through this project, I have learnt many useful things that I might be able to use in the future. This project has taught me the urgency of saving the earth and I will do my part to save my home, the Earth.

Reflective Journal 5

Date: 1st March 2009
Time: 8.04 pm

This article that I read was something different. It said about how people around the world tried to get the environmental message on how to save the world for the better. Unfortunately, only some messages caught the public’s attention.

A global movement such as Earth Hour has caught may people’s attention. It not only caught the public’s attention but also served as a lesson to the public to teach them about the urgency to save the earth.

I really think that people would have lots of tips that they can follow in their daily lives from the various channels like National Geographic. The channel flashed many tips for public to follow.

I really hope the public will use the tips wisely and join in this movement to save our home.

Virtual Tour to Chek Jawa

Date: 12 January 2009
Time: 11.30am

We had to select a perfect location that could help us with our project on animal and plant conservation. Indeed, we needed a place that provides us with a fascinating array of animals and plants from different habitat and of different adaptations.

We then viewed a virtual tour of Chek Jawa has provided magnificent sites of Chek Jawa. Chek Jawa is located at Pulau Ubin, Singapore. According to our expectations, Chek Jawa showcases rare creatures and plants that are worth knowing about. Some animals and plants have left different impact on us. Here is some information on the animals and plants that has amazed us.

Our first destination was mangrove swamp. We came across many different mangrove animals. One of the wondrous animals that we spotted was the Porcelain Fiddler Crab. This is an outstanding animal because of its vibrant colours, unlike common crabs. Its tiny body, which has a width of 1.5 – 2 cm, is coated with shiny black that has white dotted stripes. It also has a striking orange pincers that attracts our attention the most.

The next creature that amazed us was the sea slug. This creature was not very attractive or might we say it was spotless. But, one of us somehow came across this creature. What actually amazed us was the way its body system works. The sea slug’s gills are modified for breathing air. Infect, they are hermaphrodites with complicated reproductive organs to ensure cross- but not self-fertilisation. Sea slugs actually come in different colours and sizes. There are some which are so colourful that it might seem to you like a plasticy-looking toy. But the common ones that were found in the rocky shore of Chek Jawa was the blackish coloured slug. One reason this amazing creature is rarely seen is because of its colour.

Our final destination was the coastal forest of chek jawa. There, they had a canopy of trees, plants and a few wild creatures. Almost everything there was so vibrantly coloured. But, only one had caught our eye. This plant actually looked like a pinkish coloured dangling lamp. It was just unbelievable. We were so excited upon looking at the plant so intensively. We just wished we could have plucked the fruit of the plant. It was definitely very eyed catching.

From this trip to Chek Jawa, we both think that we have really learnt beyond our classrooms and daily lives. We think that this tour has not only provided us with information of different plants and animals but also an outdoor experience.

Confessions of an Acrophobia

It had always been a problem for me to do any form of high elements activities. In particular, I was afraid of doing activities like abseiling and flying fox. When all my friends are eagerly volunteering themselves to do these activities, I try my very best to escape these activities. Though I might be seen cheering for my friends, I would not dare to go up there to participate.

Although I tried my best to escape these activities for each camp, there was a particular time where I was spotted standing in a corner by a teacher. She approached me in a friendly way and was eager to know why I was away from my group of friends. After I had explained to her about my phobia, she insisted that I should experience it to see for myself if it was really scary.

My teacher then went to the place my friends were standing. She then asked the girl who was eagerly waiting to try the abseiling next to give me a chance. The girl gave up her chance to me. My teacher then explained to my friends about my phobia. Upon hearing it, my friends immediately started cheering for me. One by one came forward to tell about their experience. They also ensured me that there were no chances of me falling down as the instructor would be holding on to the other end of the rope.

Keeping their words of encouragement in mind, I climbed up the flight of stairs where the instructor was waiting for me. The instructor being a kind person, he slowly explained to me how to slowly go down. When I was going down, I could hear my friends down there cheering and screaming my name. Though I was feeling very nervous and trying to avoid looking down, I preserved throughout the journey down. When my foot finally touched the ground, I let out a sigh of relief. My friends were all crowded around me, one by one asking me how I felt.

I found this experience very unique. I thanked my friends for cheering for me and encouraging me to try. I also thanked my teacher who was waiting for me to share my experience. Though I was able to go up there because my teacher insisted I should try, I was unable to volunteer myself again. I then realized that my fear has restricted me from doing high elements activities and looking down from high-rise buildings. I have taken this weakness of mine more as a motivation rather than a discouragement. I try my best in most scenarios to do these activities to get out of my fear.
